I run my entire NPM suite (NPM, SAM, VNQM, IPAM, NTA, NCM) plus the SQL server on one box, and I haven't had any performance problems. 2800 elements monitored, on a dual 6-core 2.6GHz w/48GB RAM, with a 80GB SSD drive for DB.
