While SAM uses standard protocols such as SNMP and WMI for Asset Inventory collection, not all information is available natively from the operating system without installing the hardware vendors required agent software. One such example of this is the serial number of the machine. Unfortunately the Windows operating system has no knowledge of what the serial number is of the machine the operating system is installed on. As such, this information is not available via SNMP or WMI until those APIs are extended with additional information made available by the vendor specific agent software. Without the serial number of the machine, SAM is unable to determine its warranty status.
