Until there's an alternative to SNMP that is just as simple and universally supported, it can't just go away. It's the one protocol I expect to be present on every device I manage. And the data to be collected via SNMP is crucial to managing and monitoring a proper infrastructure. Take SNMP away, and now I'm stuck pulling stats via WMI for Windows boxes, custom scripting for Linux / UNIX, and just guessing how my Cisco devices are doing.
