Thanks for the two comments. We're looking into what we can do about the first one - at least a warning on the page would be very helpful.
On the SMS, the best we can do right now is email to an SMS gateway. We do support an SMS template, so if you're using an SMS gateway you can enable the SMS template and when it sends to the email system it'll be a short handy message rather than the full message.
A better way to support SMS is definitely something we're looking at for post-v1. I posted an idea over here: Support for paging/SMS directly (bypassing email) that you can vote on and add your comments on anything (how you'd like to see it done, something specific).
