XY mode is used for example with Java applets or Flash applets. There it's only way how to automate them. Using XY mode with plain webpage can help in some specific scenarios that is based on specific page.
If you mention that recording using standard mode is not working, that is what we should focus on first. I would update support case from "WPM does not work with Ctrl+... keystroke" to "WPM does not work with my website". Support should check why it does not work with standard mode at the first place.
