When I was in a serious campus ministry in college we called writing down numbers or contact information on scrap paper having a "toilet paper ministry" because that was usually about all that it was good for. They would invariably get lost or misplaced. But, finding scraps of paper left behind by a predecessor can certainly give up some good data if there's not much other documentation left behind.
I like to use "show vlan" to get a list of the vlans that are being used along with several of the commands above. Hopefully they have somewhat useful descriptions.
